Our Mission
We defend equality, human rights, and democracy in Central America by supporting social organizations and leaders, mobilizing resources, and building alliances within and across sectors.
Our Vision
We envision a Central America where democracy thrives, civic space is open, and all people live with dignity, equality, and justice.
Our Strategic Direction
In 2025, SIF launched its 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, reaffirming our role as a trusted intermediary and convener for Central America. This plan sharpens our focus on three long-term objectives: mobilizing resources at scale, strengthening leaders and organizations, and building cross-sector alliances to defend democracy, human rights, and equality in the region.
Our Origins
Seattle International Foundation (SIF) was founded in 2008 by Bill and Paula Clapp to expand the impact of international philanthropy from Washington state, with a strategic focus on Central America. The Clapps had long been engaged in philanthropy and international development, and their commitment to justice and equity in the region laid the foundation for SIF’s creation.
In 2020, after decades of service in philanthropy and international development, the Clapps stepped down from the Board, leaving a legacy of leadership and deep commitment to Central America. Under new leadership, SIF recommitted its exclusive focus on Central America and transitioned from a private family foundation into a philanthropic intermediary — mobilizing donor resources and channeling them securely and strategically to organizations and movements on the ground.
