7th annual WOMEN of the WORLD breakfast 12/9/2016

The WOMEN of the WORLD Breakfast celebrates Washington State’s role in global development, and highlights leading Washington-based organizations working to advance the rights of women and girls worldwide. 2016's program included a keynote conversation with Connie Collingsworth, General Counsel at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, moderated by author and journalist, Ruchika Tulshyan; a Seattle spotlight on global philanthropy with Katherine Cheng, Head of Global Corporate Citizenship and Community Relations for Expedia, Inc.; and a panel discussion with Seattle Times business reporter, Ángel González, and two leading Cuban entrepreneurs and co-founders of Cuba’s first independent design store, Clandestina.  Click here to learn more.



2016 Central America Donors Forum 09/28/16-09/30/16

The 2016 Donors Forum was held September 28-30 in Antigua, Guatemala, and co-hosted by the Swedish Embassy in Guatemala. The Central America Donors Forum is a unique, annual meeting that brings together leaders from government, media, the private sector, and philanthropy to discuss economic development and poverty issues in Central America. The Forum provides an opportunity to discuss successful development and CSR models, meet key leaders working in the region, and explore co-investment for social impact in Central America. 2015 Central America Donors Forum 11/18/15-11/9/15

The 2015 Donors Forum was held November 18-19, 2015 in San Salvador, El Salvador. The Central America Donors Forum is a unique, annual meeting that brings together leaders from government, media, the private sector, and philanthropy to discuss economic development and poverty issues in Central America. 6th annual WOMEN of the WORLD breakfast 12/9/2015

The WOMEN of the WORLD Breakfast celebrates Washington State’s role in global development, and highlights leading Washington-based organizations working to advance the rights of women and girls worldwide. This year's keynote speakers included Bill Neukom and his daughter, Gillian Neukom Toledo, who discussed why they invest in women and girls globally, as well as two inspirational leaders from India. SIF and Seattle Foundation also announced over $190,000 in grants to King County nonprofits through their inaugural Global Give Together committee. Click here to learn more.

The 2014 Central America Donors Forum,  hosted by Ford Foundation in collaboration with the Seattle International Foundation, was held in Mexico City December 2-3, 2014. The forum is a unique, annual meeting that brings together leaders from government, media, the private sector, and philanthropy to discuss economic development and poverty issues in Central America. 5th annual WOMEN of the WORLD breakfast 11/20/14

The WOMEN of the WORLD breakfast brings together over 300 women leaders from philanthropy, media, business and the nonprofit sector to advance Washington state’s role in global development, and in particular advancing the economic and legal rights of women and girls. Our keynote speaker this year will be Julie Lewis, founder of the 30/30 Project, which supports health clinics in the developing world. SIF will also announce grants to local organizations working to promote the rights of women and girls around the world.

4th annual WOMEN in the WORLD breakfast 11/15/2013

Every year, over 250 women leaders from business, philanthropy, academia, and the media come together at SIF’s Women in the World breakfast to learn about and celebrate Seattle’s role in advancing the economic and social empowerment of women around the globe.
This year's featured speakers include two extraordinary young women leaders from Rwanda and Peru, who are both beneficiaries of Seattle-based organizations changing the lives of women and girls. This event will feature music by Naomi Wachira, recently named “Best Folk Singer” in Seattle Weekly’s annual “Best of Seattle.” SIF will also announce more than $200,000 in grants to local organizations working on women's issues around the world. 2013 Central America Donors Forum 10/25/2013

The 2013 Central America Donors Forum, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Seattle International Foundation, brings together leaders from business, philanthropy, government, and civil society, to discuss priority issues and successful models of collaboration and co-investment in Central America. The Forum is co-sponsored by USAID, the Inter-American Foundation, Hispanics in Philanthropy, The Summit Foundation, and other funders working in the region. Seattle University Research Trip 6/26-7/6/2013

Seattle University and the Seattle International Foundation carried out a research trip with ten student fellows to assess the impact of Asociacion Generando, one of SIF’s grantees working to end violence against women. Mujeres Adelante: Women's Delegation to End Gender-Based Violence 6/14-6/22/2013

In June 2013, SIF hosted fourteen women leaders from seven Central American countries and the Dominican Republic in Seattle for a weeklong leadership-training program entitled Mujeres Adelante. The delegation met with various private and public institutions in King County focused on the elimination and prevention of gender-based violence (GBV) to enhance their knowledge around the latest strategies, service models, and public policies used to address violence against women. Mujeres Adelante is a partnership between SIF and the Office of Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. Click here for more information.

   


City of Seattle and SIF launch Seattle Ambassador program 4/15/2013

The City of Seattle and the Seattle International Foundation (SIF) are partnering to educate and mobilize local residents to support Seattle’s thriving global development sector through the Seattle Ambassador program, a city-wide campaign to raise awareness about local institutions working to alleviate poverty around the world and ask individuals to lend their support to this important sector. By signing up, residents will receive updates about the work of these organizations and learn about opportunities to get involved. Participants will be entered for a chance to be a Seattle Ambassador, and win an all-expense paid trip to see first-hand how our community is improving lives in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Women's Delegation to Guatemala 4/1-4/8/2013

SIF lead a delegation of women from Seattle to Guatemala to experience firsthand how strategic philanthropy to empower women and girls is changing thousands of lives and creating positive social change. Through site visits and dialogue with government officials, NGO leaders, and journalists, the delegation explored how programs focused on women and girls are changing the current social, economic and political landscape. Central America Partner Meeting 3/14-3/16/2013

In March 2013, the Seattle International Foundation (SIF) and the Summit Foundation organized a forum in Antigua, Guatemala to convene its regional partners around the issue of strengthening local leadership in Central America, with a focus on gender and youth. 3rd annual Women in the World breakfast 12/7/2012

Over 300 women leaders from philanthropy, business, media, academia, and the nonprofit sector gathered at the Four Seasons Seattle to discuss the importance of investing in women and girls at the 3rd annual Women in the World breakfast. This year’s featured speakers included President of Oxfam America Ray Offenheiser, the first female Attorney General of Guatemala Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz, and activist and community leader Glanis Changachirere, Founder and  Director of Institute for Young Women Development in Zimbabwe – all committed leaders working to empowering women and girls.

A public event followed the formal breakfast program, featuring a Q&A Session with Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz, Attorney General of Guatemala, and a Panel Discussion on women's leadership for social change featuring women leaders working in Guatemala, Kazahkstan, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Central American Women's Delegation 7/22-7/28/2012

SIF partnered with the U.S. Department of State to host and provide training to a delegation of ten Central American women leaders in Seattle from July 22-28. These leaders are working to promote women’s rights and address the critical issue of sexual and gender-based violence in Central America.  The delegation met with various private and public institutions focused on domestic violence to enhance their knowledge around the latest strategies, service models, and public policies used to address violence against women. Central America regional partners meeting 1/24-27/2012
More than seventy of SIF and ELAW’s Central American civil society partners convened in San Salvador, El Salvador to critically analyze the links between climate change, environmental degradation, poverty and existing legislation to address these issues. In addition, the conference addressed the adverse effects of critical concerns such as climate change and rising levels of crime and violence on rural communities and marginalized populations, specifically women. SIF Co-hosts Conference on Preventing Youth Violence in the Americas 6/28/11
On June 28, 2011, SIF will attend a conference in Washington, D.C., to discuss best practices and lessons learned around youth crime prevention in the Americas.  The conference will take place at the OAS headquarters in collaboration with USAID and the US State Department. The workshop will bring together government agencies, donors and practitioners to discuss the following topics: successful approaches to community policing, public-private sector alliances in crime prevention, juvenile justice reform and youth movements. SIF Supports PBS Newshour on Guatemala 3/4/2011
SIF celebrates the 100th International Women's Day by supporting a special PBS Newshour program on poverty and violence against women in Guatemala. Host Ray Suarez will report on critical issues facing women in Guatemala such as high infant and maternal mortality rates, and frightening levels of violence. Oscar's Cuba 1/21/2011
Join us on Friday, January 21st for the screening of "Oscar's Cuba" and to meet the director of this film, Jordan Allott. Oscar’s Cuba, a 60-minute video documentary, presented in Spanish and English, will tell the story of Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, a prisoner of conscience currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for the crime of “disrespecting the revolution” through his promotion of human rights, democracy and respect for human life in Cuba. Central America Network Meeting 12/1-3/2010
This three-day conference titled "Uniendo Esfuerzos Centroamericanos" held in San Jose, Costa Rica brought together Central America’s most important political, academic, nonprofit, philanthropic and advocacy leaders to discuss some of the region’s most pressing issues while creating partnerships and sharing strategies to overcome obstacles to poverty alleviation.
