SIF awards more than $700,000 for development projects in Central America

The Seattle International Foundation (SIF) announces today $705,000.00 in support of projects in Central America, focused on education, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, economic development, women’s empowerment and youth leadership.

The grants awarded reflect SIF’s partners’ expertise and passion to alleviate poverty in Central America.

Seattle International Foundation (SIF) was founded as a supporting organization to The Seattle Foundation for the purpose of increasing and enhancing international philanthropy and development efforts from the Pacific Northwest and to serve as a resource to our community.

The following are SIF’s recent, 2010 grantees working in Central America:

1 ActionAid USA Guatemala $25,000 Provide emergency aid and humanitarian assistance to communities most affected by Tropical Storm Agatha in Guatemala
2 Amigos de Santa Cruz Guatemala $15,000 Implement vocational training courses in the recently constructed CECAP center, focusing primarily on women, in Santa Cruz, Guatemala
3 Ashoka El Salvador $50,000 Expand the Ashoka Avacemos program in El Salvador
4 Catholic Relief Services (San Marcos Diocese) Guatemala $8,000.00 Provide emergency aid and humanitarian assistance to communities most affected by Tropical Storm Agatha in Guatemala
5 Central American Leadership Institute Regional $50,000 Motivate effective and responsible philanthropic and business leaders  in Central America, and increase involvement with the most pressing issues throughout the region
6 Due Process of Law Foundation Regional $65,000 Support the promotion of judicial transparency and accountability as a tool to promote rule of law in Central America
7 ELAW Regional $58,000 Support the 2010 regional ELAW conference in Central America, to be held in Costa Rica
8 Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres Regional $32,000 Support 7-10 grassroots, women’s groups in Central America
9 Fundación del Camino Guatemala $14,000 Provide technical training and access to technology for disadvantaged youth and children in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala
10 Fundación Nacional para el Desarrollo- El Salvador (FUNDE) El Salvador $17,000 Support ongoing research on poverty in the region and support SIF’s Central America Network
11 Global Partnerships Central & South America $300,000 Provide capital and support for partners working in micro-finance throughout Latin America
12 Global Social Mobile Association Development Fund Guatemala $10,000 Support research and planning to develop a mobile technology project in Central America, primarily focused on women
13 Global Visionaries Guatemala $12,500 Provide general operating support to educate and empower Guatemalan and Seattle youth
14 iLeap Regional $49,000 Support the leadership development program for five Central American women in Seattle, WA
