SIF announces $223,300 in grants to alleviate global poverty
Seattle International Foundation is pleased to announce $233,300 in grants under its Global Program, created to support and strengthen the international non-profit sector in the Puget Sound area and Washington state.
The grants awarded reflect the tremendous diversity and talent of organizations based in Washington, working to alleviate poverty around the world. This work ranges from increasing access to clean water for communities in Ethiopia, empowering youth in Guatemala, and providing micro-credit loans and business management training to borrowers in Ghana.
SIF is proud to announce grants to the following programs:
$15,000 for Amigos de Santa Cruz to provide continued support for the CECAP vocational training center, focusing primarily on indigenous women in Santa Cruz, Guatemala.
$15,000 for Burkitt’s Lymphoma Fund for Africa to support the availability of medical supplies for cancer patients, increase patient adherence through support for patients and their families, and build the capacity of local medical personnel treating this rare form of cancer.
$2,500 for Give2Cuba to provide seed capital for microenterprises run by women in Cuba.
$5,000 for the Global Foundation for Children with Hearing Loss to provide support for their programs in Vietnam and their expansion to the Czech Republic and Guatemala, serving children with hearing loss by providing essential technology and training for local medical professionals.
$15,000 for Global Visionaries to support GV’s programs working to empower youth to become global leaders through community service and innovative leadership training in the United States and Guatemala.
$2,500 for Landesa to increase the legal rights of women to inherit and own land in rural India.
$10,000 for Lumana to support the Ofankor micro-loan fund in Ghana, providing small loans to 300 new entrepreneurial clients. SIF funds will also support the hiring of loan officers to monitor the program and to provide small business training for micro-loan borrowers.
$5,000 for ProPesca to provide start-up funding for ProPesca in Central America, in partnership with the largest fisheries associations in El Salvador. ProPesca will assist local fishermen with restoration and environmental practices.
$10,000 for the Seattle Latino Film Festival to support the screenings, and related educational events in the greater Seattle area, of films about Central America and issues facing the region.
$15,000 for Water First International to support their Ethiopian partners in constructing nine public water points in the community of Gonbisa Kussaye, Ethiopia.
$15,000 for One World Now! to support OWN's work with local Seattle youth in providing access to critical language studies, leadership development and study abroad opportunities for underserved high school students.
$27,500 for Prosthetics Outreach Foundation to fund services for people with disabilities and training for local medical professionals in Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Haiti. This grant is made possible by the financial support of Pamela Thorstenson and William Tellini, and the Seattle International Foundation.
$85,800 for TeenSmart International to provide general operating support for TeenSmart’s programs serving at-risk youth in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This grant is made in partnership with the financial support, of the Strachan Foundation and individual donors, including a partial match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
SIF has screened and reviewed over 100 Washington State nonprofits working globally, and strives to identify and support high-impact organizations working internationally. SIF accepts applications for funding under the Global Program twice each year and will announce its next round in early Fall 2012.
