SIF awards $129,000 to support initiatives in El Salvador
focused on leadership and advocacy training for women and youth

Seattle –The Seattle International Foundation (SIF) is pleased to announce $129,000 in grants to support leadership programs for women and youth in El Salvador. The projects funded focus on strengthening individuals’ advocacy and leadership skills; organizing public awareness campaigns around violence prevention; and influencing public policies related to poverty alleviation in the region.

SIF awarded a grant of $24,000 to Asociación Mujeres Transformando (MT) to provide leadership training to 50 women with the specific goal of utilizing El Salvador’s new Transparency and Public Access to Information Law, Municipal Codes, and the Youth Protection Law to influence local government funding decisions and promote increased investment in programs serving women and youth.

$25,000 was awarded to Fundación de la Comunicación para el Desarrollo (COMUNICÁNDONOS) to train 170 young leaders (155 women and 15 men) from at-risk communities in Guazapa, El Salvador in effective communication and leadership skills. Support for this project includes two public awareness campaigns around violence prevention with a focus on gender-based violence, and three radio forums around civic and political participation of youth.

$30,000 was awarded to Fundación Nacional para el Desarrollo El Salvador (FUNDE), a nonprofit organization based in San Salvador. FUNDE’s mission is to influence the formation of effective and sustainable public policies related to poverty alleviation in Central America through research, education, training, and advocacy.

$50,000 was awarded to Ashoka, Innovators for the Public to provide continued support to the Avancemos program in six cities in El Salvador, supporting 290 youth collectives, which involve between 1,500 and 2,000 youth.  Ashoka, also known as Youth Venture, supports young people between 14 and 24 years of age by providing the tools and leadership skills necessary to become change makers in their communities.
